Solutions built on spreadsheets can serve a great need but they are prone to data corruption as they grow in size and there is generally no continuity in the design or maintenance of the tools. Furthermore, they are usually not part of the corporate disaster recovery plan and may not even be backed-up regularly. On the other side of the spectrum are ERP solutions or bolt-ons that are expensive and generic. They require extensive modification of the business or the software to make them work optimally.
