The Akorn Application Toolkit (Akorn) is an application toolkit designed to make it easy to build robust data driven web applications as well as make them easy to maintain and enhance.

There has always been a delicate balance between developing applications quickly and developing ones that are maintainable and extensible. This balance was required because most applications required extensive coding to accomplish the simplest of tasks. Just for reference, perform a search for html web forms or alternating list rows. You see thousands of “how tos” on performing these very simple tasks. Shouldn't we have moved past this by now…we think so.

Ruby on Rails has burst on to the scene because, well, it is pretty easy to build applications with. Akorn takes this capability a step further by using the toolkit itself to build new applications. And, best of all, it is designed to work on a hardened PHP installation. That means that it will run on virtually any PHP installation whether it is in a corporate data center or at a shared hosting company.

We won't dive into the technical details here, but suffice to say that Akorn is designed to operate using today's latest AJAX technology while retaining significant flexibility to adopt whatever new technology comes along in the future. It was envisioned as a functional (business) user's dream and a technical (coder) user's enabler.

Tartan Solutions has open-sourced the toolkit under the GNU GPL so that others may benefit and contribute to it. For those who would like to use it for commercial purposes we offer a Commercial License which frees you from the restrictions of the GPL.
